From Home to Home

Black culture is complicated because of the challenges faced; racism, sexism, and home training. Culture is important because it helps gain knowledge from ancestors and ancestry. It can also help you gain knowledge about yourself. Culture is also constructed by society, which makes it important. Attending an HBCU where the “black culture” is 99.9%. Almost everyone fits into this specific culture on campus. Here they are sitting in the 3rd-floor lobby at an HBCU, playing cards, eating mac and cheese from fried chicken Wednesday, chatting it up like they don’t have class in the morning. Welcome to “Culture”. Everyone has different cultures, which is what separates one from the other.
As African Americans. Racism was bad back. It's still bad now but maybe not as bad. Racism is more than just prejudice in thought or action. Racism changes over time, which impacts different communities in certain ways. Racism comes in all forms, harassment, physical and verbal abuse, violence, etc. Racism also came with racial segregation, where blacks and white weren’t equal, it was a whites-only world but here came the Brown vs Board of Education which ended racial segregation, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination, race, color, religion, and sex.
Sexism is the stereotyping typically against women on basis of sex. Sexism became a thing on November 18, 1965, by Pauline M. Let during a Student Faculty Forum at Franklin Marshall College. Sexism emerged from the second wave of the Feminism. The Sexiest discrimination against females maintains male domination and power. As a black female you’ll more than likely to face this every day. It imposes limits on what boys and men can and should do and what girls and women should and can do. In earlier days, Men were the ones working in Warehouses, such as Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, Factories. Now, In Today’s time, there are probably 50% women and 50% men working in Warehouses. Women dominance can be just as strong as male dominance.
Home training is another story. Home-training starts at home, being taught how to act in public and how to approach others, say yes ma’am and no ma’am, having manners, personal hygiene, respect, and social etiquette. Having no home training can lead to trouble, not knowing right from wrong to getting talked about in public because you're doing something that’s not supposed to be done. A lot of parents mess up when they expect children to learn things like this at school. Teachers are at school to educate your child, not to potty-train them, teach them right from wrong. They can teach them but that's not their job. Always remember your child reflects, feeds off and learn from you.
Culture, culture is a lot of things but perfect. Especially in the world that We are living In. Racism, Prejudice, Sexism still exists. When your kids, nieces, nephews, brothers, and sisters grow up, Culture is the first important thing they will need to learn about because it is generational. Culture involves symbols, language, values, artifacts, thoughts, behavior, religion and attitudes from people in society. Knowing about culture can help many understand their own biases and preferences. Different culture has different ideas about what they want, when they want it and how they want it. Cultural Diversity can have a powerful impact on communication within different

Reflection

During the completion of this essay, I felt slightly overwhelmed. Not because it took forever but simply because I had to put a lot of thought and research into this essay. For this to be the first essay wasn't as bad, but I felt a slightly confident while typing this essay because I actually enjoyed this topic and research.  Something that you must do before trying to write an essay is detail and think out how to write your essay. Going off the top of your head trying to just put together information isn’t always the right way to write essays.

For future references, i have to learn to not procrastinate and wait till the last minute by starting early and know what I'm talking about. Waiting until the last minute and then feeling like you're rushing isn’t a good feeling because then you start to stress and overthink and then it leads to getting off topic. I have learned to hook the reader's attention and focus on the main topic when writing to an academic audience. I also learned to keep my writing simple but also readable. In the future, I can apply what I learn to keep the audience's attention by simply keeping the audience's attention. Another thing is I must know the audience that I’m writing or talking to, to know what to talk about, what form and how to talk to my audience.
